Favorite Cartoons

While growing up, there were always a few cartoons that I absolutely must see when I get home from school each day. Of course, this is the age of the television babysitter, so the boob-tube had always been a very reliable caretaker when I was little.

Much of cartoons in the 80's were directed to boys and male audiences. There were some shows targeting girls, such as Jem and My Little Pony, but they were so few in choices in comparison to cartoons for boys.

Among my favorites, one staple in my daily need for quality TV programming: G.I. Joes!

Well, the real American heroes, right? Back then, G.I. Joe was the coolest show, because you get to see the good guys kick bad guys' asses every single day. The part that I loved was the fact that there were so many different characters. I read on a G.I. Joe fansite that said the cartoon had the largest number of characters among all the cartoon shows during its run. The funny things that I observed were:

Female G.I. Joes: Scarlett, Lady Jaye, and Covergirl were the only female members on the force during its first season. They were all kind of stereotypes of how women were perceived back in the 70's and 80's. Scarlett was the crossbow-wielding soldier who was Duke's girlfriend; Covergirl was the modeling diva who drives a tank; Lady Jaye was the spear-throwing girlfriend of Flint. Isn't it such a coincidence that two of them were girlfriends of the two highest ranking members of G.I. Joe? I smell sexual harassment...

Polly, Shipwreck's Parrot: Polly was such an annoying bird. He was only on the show as comic relief for the equally annoying sailor, Shipwreck. With Shipwreck being a sexist, misogynist, and chauvinistic pig, you can only imagine that they needed someone/something to make funny of him.

Sergeant Slaughter: He may have been a pig and a totally insensitive jerk, but don't forget that he is also a real life person! Sgt. Slaughter used to be the wrestling partner for Hulk Hogan, so I gotta cheer for him when I saw him on TV. Kind of dorky, but I guess I didn't know that wrestling was fake back then...

Cobra Commander: Did you know that Cobra Commander's voice is the same as Starscream from Transformer? At first, I didn't notice it, but then if you listen a bit, it's very easy to recognize that abrasive, scratchy voice. Oh yeah, Cobra Commander's an idiot...short and simple. In many ways, you pretty much can't tell the difference between Cobra Commander and Starscream. Well maybe Cobra Commander does the flair for changing his outfit all the time as compared to all the rest of the characters on the show.

Destro: I was always confused with the whole metallic face. It makes Destro look like a robot, right? Well apparently it's just an allusion to the Count of Monte Cristo, I think. If he was wearing an iron mask, then how does his lips move? He also wore a very weird outfit...

Tomax & Xomat: The whole twins thing was so cool. It was kinda corny when you later find out that it's just a play on the whole Siamese twin thing. They somehow made it look like they were very GQ and handsome, but when there's a closeup, they look like so scary. Although there were two of them in battles, you only had to beat up one in order to win. Gosh, that kind of makes them kind of useless when it came to fist fights.
